Crypto Super PAC Drops $1.5M to Hit Al Green in Texas Primary

-

The crypto-backed super PAC Protect Progress said it will spend $1.5 million opposing U.S. Rep. Al Green in Texas’ next Democratic primary.

The group tied the spending to Green’s past opposition to crypto bills in Congress. It pointed to his seat on the House Financial Services Committee.

Protect Progress, an affiliate of the larger crypto-aligned operation Fairshake, gave its message to The Hill. It said: “As a member of the Financial Services Committee, Representative Al Green has decided to try and stop American innovation in its tracks.”

GENIUS Act and CLARITY Act become the central flashpoints

The report said Al Green opposed the stablecoin-focused GENIUS Act and the market-structure CLARITY Act.

Protect Progress also framed the push as a response to Green’s posture toward the crypto sector in Texas. It said:

“Texas voters can no longer sit by and have representation in Congress that is actively hostile towards a growing Texas crypto community.”

The group added another line aimed at the broader theme of economic policy. It said it wanted “new members who embrace innovation, growth and wealth creation for all Americans.”

Christian Menefee faces Al Green as groups score crypto stances

Green, who has represented a Houston-area seat since 2005, will face Christian Menefee in the Democratic primary for a reshaped district.

Texas holds its primary on March 3, 2026, and the general election follows on Nov. 3, 2026, based on the report’s timeline and Texas’ primary calendar coverage.

Crypto advocacy group Stand With Crypto listed Al Green as “strongly against crypto,” while it rated Christian Menefee as “strongly supports crypto,” based on voting history, statements, and questionnaire answers.

Menefee’s questionnaire response cited a government use case. He pointed to fighting deed fraud by putting property records on a blockchain.

He said:

“That kind of innovation could protect working families from scams and modernize outdated government systems. I’d support or introduce bills that promote practical, public-serving blockchain use cases like this.”

Fairshake expands midterm plans with $193M disclosed for 2026

The move against Green fits a wider crypto-backed push ahead of the 2026 midterm cycle. Fairshake and its affiliates disclosed raising more than $193 million for the midterms, according to reporting in late January.

The Cointelegraph report also noted Fairshake’s earlier spending. It said the group spent roughly $130 million in the 2024 elections, helping boost the number of pro-crypto officeholders.

Another Fairshake affiliate, Defend American Jobs, also entered a separate race.

It said it would spend $5 million to support Republican Barry Moore in an Alabama Senate bid, according to a Bloomberg-linked report.
