Robinhood is at it again. This time, it’s bringing private markets to the masses.
The trading platform announced plans to launch a private markets fund, allowing retail investors to access investments traditionally reserved for institutions.

Private equity. Venture capital. Pre-IPO companies.
The stuff that only accredited investors and institutions could touch.
Parallels to ICOs
The parallels to ICOs are obvious. During the 2017 crypto boom, ICOs promised retail investors access to early-stage projects.
Many of those projects failed. Some were outright scams. But the promise of democratized access was compelling.
Robinhood is making a similar promise. But with more regulatory oversight. More investor protections. And presumably, more vetting of the underlying investments.
Historically, investing in private markets was limited to institutions and the elite, but not anymore. With Robinhood Ventures, you can now get exposure to private companies like the ones listed below 👇 pic.twitter.com/vLwiKCukIW

Is this good for retail
The question is whether this is good for retail investors. Private markets are illiquid.
They’re risky. They’re hard to value. Institutions have teams of analysts to evaluate these investments. Retail investors don’t.
On the other hand, the current system is unfair. Why should only the wealthy have access to the best investment opportunities? Robinhood’s move challenges that exclusivity.
Robinhood’s most ambitious move
The fund’s structure and fees will matter. If costs are reasonable and transparency is high, this could be a genuine innovation.
If not, it’s just another way to extract fees from retail. Robinhood has a history of disrupting traditional finance. This might be its most ambitious move yet.
