Solana just presented a case when blockchain meets bad taste

-

Listen, guys, let me tell you a story about Solana, the blockchain network that thought it was clever.

They posted an ad for their Solana Accelerate conference, and boy, did it backfire.

When you make a joke, but not everyone laughs

The ad depicted a guy in therapy, talking about innovation, and the therapist suggests he should focus on creating new genders instead.

It’s not 2023 anymore, but it still was like they were trying to stir up a hornet’s nest. The ad was a mess, and people weren’t having it.

It racked up over 1.2 million views, but the comments were mostly negative. Known names like Sean O’Connor from Blocknative called it tone deaf, especially at a time when trans people are allegedly facing real challenges.

It was like Solana decided to kick a hornet’s nest and then wondered why they got stung.

Self-censorship

Solana quickly deleted the ad, but they didn’t say why. Some people think it was because it hurt their business, not because they actually thought it was wrong.

Adam Cochran from Cinneamhain Ventures wasn’t shy about it:

“They rolled it back because it hurt their business, not because they thought it was wrong.”

Others, like David McIntyre from DoubleZero, questioned why they couldn’t just keep the message positive instead of making light of serious issues.

Professionalism

The backlash was so strong that even initial supporters started backing away. Tushar Jain from Multicoin Capital initially praised the ad as bold and risky, but after some reflection, he deleted his post.

He realized that focusing on deeper cultural issues might have been a better move. It’s like they learned the hard way that sometimes, it’s better to stick to what you know, blockchain, not social commentary.

Well, it seems Solana needs to work on its PR skills. Maybe next time, they’ll think twice before diving into sensitive, highly politized topics.

After all, in the world of blockchain, it’s better to focus on building technologies, not controversies.
