A South Korean man, 39, will stand trial after prosecutors accused him of poisoning a business partner during a dispute tied to crypto trading losses worth 1.17 billion won ($816,000).

The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors’ Office indicted the man on charges of attempted murder and violating the Pesticide Control Act, according to reporting that cited prosecutors.

Prosecutors said the case centers on an alleged attack at a café in Seoul after a conflict over money linked to a joint Bitcoin investment program run by the two men.

Methomyl Pesticide Coffee Claim Tied to Seoul Café Meeting

Prosecutors allege the accused gave his business partner coffee that contained methomyl, a toxic pesticide, during a meeting on Nov. 23.

Reporting tied the meeting to a café near Seokchon Lake in Songpa-gu, Seoul, and placed it around 9 p.m.

After the partner drank the coffee, he collapsed and later regained consciousness three days afterward, according to the same reports.

Bitcoin Investment Program Dispute Focused on 1.17 Billion Won Loss

The two men reportedly started working together in 2022 and ran a business that managed Bitcoin investment programs.

A dispute followed after prosecutors said the accused lost more than 1.17 billion won ($816,000), which included company funds he had put into trading.

After the losses, the partner took over the company’s finances, according to local reporting cited in follow-up coverage.

Seoul Eastern District Court Sets March 10 Trial for Attempted Murder Charge

A trial is scheduled for March 10 at the Seoul Eastern District Court, according to reports that cited prosecutors and court scheduling.

The accused faces the attempted murder charge alongside the Pesticide Control Act allegation, which prosecutors linked to the suspected use of methomyl in the drink.

The victim described personal impact in a statement reported by local media coverage. He said,

“I was about to get married, and my wife was in the early stages of pregnancy. My family was almost completely destroyed. I’ve recovered a lot now, but I still go to the hospital.”
